Chirnside Park 9.8.62 def Wantirna South 7.14.56

Best: Choc, Lunz, Cat, DMack, Upo, Boulder & Bez

Goals: Boulder 3, Cat 3, DMack 2, Lanza 1

The Vets played their final game last Sunday against Wantirna South. The game was AB's last as coach of the Vets team and after many years of great service to the club Douls & PB also announced that it was their last games and the boys certainly wanted to win this one those guys.

We got off to a good start kicking 4 goals to 3 into the breeze. Boulder was looking very dangerous up forward and Cat & DMack were providing plenty of run and carry from their respective wing positions.

Despite kicking 3 goals to 1 in the 2nd ¼ AB was far from happy at half time as the boys seemed to stop doing the hard work that was created in the 1st term. Lenny, Upo & Bez were instrumental in setting up play in the middle and Choc was solid as a rock in the last line of defence and was clearly getting on top of his much quicker opponent.

The second half was far more even and Wantirna Sth to their credit kept coming at us and never allowed us to dictate play. Fortunately their bad kicking allowed us to maintain the lead all day. The final quarter saw Wantirna Sth outscore us 2 goals to 0 and the game came down to the wire as we managed to hold on win by 6 points.

So that concludes another year for the Vets which unfortunately saw us just miss the finals by ½ a game. Injuries and unavailability of key players throughout the year certainly didn't help our cause, however the boys finished off the year well winning the final 3 games.

Thanks must go to all who helped out during the course of the season and those people will be officially thanked at our Presentation Night.

This years Veteran's Presentation Night is being held at the club on Fri 27th August starting at 7pm. Cost will be $5 per adult (Kids are Free) and includes a BBQ tea with drinks at bar prices

David Swankie was last week announced as the new coach for the 2011 season, which will no doubt kick off again with pre-Xmas fitness training in October.

Sunday 25th July 2010Chirnside Park 10.4.64 def Forest Hill 6.8.44

Best: Upton, Jenkins, Muzza, DMcK, Pasinati, Thomas, Oates, Berry & Cat

Goals: Pasinati 2, Thomas 1, Cat 1, DMcK 1, Bruno 1, Fritsch 1, Douls 1, Muzza 1, Bollen 1.

The Vets played fourth placed Forest Hill in what turned out to be a terrific game of footy.

The first term was very even with both sides playing good attacking footy. The late withdrawal of Swanks caused a reshuffle of the side however, the inclusion of quality midfielders in Troy & Shorty certainly lifted the side. Muzza was racking up possessions and applying much needed defensive pressure in the forward line and at the first change we were a goal up.

We stepped up a gear in the second quarter and managed to slam home 5 goals to 2. Upo and Karl were providing plenty of run from half back while the boys in the mid field were providing clearances from the stoppages. Unfortunately we lost Douls who looked set for a big game with a calf strain and Stickers rolled his ankle which left us light on in defence. The much spoken about 1% efforts were very evident during this quarter as we went into ½ time with a handy 21 point lead.

The feeling amongst the boys at half time was terrific, however AB stressed that Forest Hill were a quality outfit and would certainly fight back in the second half. Sure enough Forest Hill came out and kicked a couple of quick goals putting them right back in the contest. As a result of this DMcK started to assert his authority on a wing and Cat and Paz were working hard around the ground. Stickers re-taped his ankle and toughed out the game and in typical fashion was rock solid in the last line of defence. The old warrior PB was proving to be reliable as ever as he provided a much needed target at CHF and slotted our only goal for the term.

The last quarter was a real slog, particularly the first 10mins with both sides tiring but still attacking the ball with the same ferocity shown in the opening ¼. DMcK who had played a terrific second ½ broke free and slotted the sealer with 8 mins left on the clock. Overall it was a great game and a terrific team effort to account for a side that has played off in finals the last five years.

Our final game for the year is on 8th August against Wantirna South.

Sunday 27th June 2010 – Mooroolbark 16.15.111 def Chirnside Park 5.6.36

Best: Reynolds, Oates, Arthur, Pasinati

The Vets played top of the table Mooroolbark last Sunday and were given a good old football lesson.

With numerous players unavailable due to injury and other commitments it would be fair to say that we were undermanned on the day. Despite this, it was very disappointing that for the second week running that we failed to follow basic instructions.

The only highlight for the game was Jarrod Molloy agreeing to play a game with the guys after having being retired since 2003. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to get the ball down into our forward line often enough for Jarrod to have an impact on the match.

We will need a vast improvement on our recent form if we are to register any more wins for the year.

Next game is on 11th July at home against North Ringwood.
